Two useful clues: if a ping exits directly opposite its starting port, that whole row or column is empty. Firing back into an exit retraces the same route, so it adds no new information.
Five pings or fewer earns the top score. A three-ping solve is possible on every hull, but it is a bonus—not the expected result.
